As the holiday season approaches everyone needs to be reminded that if you intend to send that gift to your loved one across the country you must know how to package it correctly to avoid it being damaged during shipping. Instruction:

Select a sturdy box that is slightly larger than the shipped items. This allows you enough space to properly cushion the contents
Use heavy-duty, 2-inch packing tape to secure the bottom of the box along the center and side seams. Add additional tape layers for boxes that will contain fragile or heavy items. Tape is inexpensive, so don't skimp
Place a layer of bubble wrap, foam peanuts or wadded up newspaper in the bottom of each box. This initial layer helps with shock absorption, and keeps items from tearing through the bottom if the tape gives way.
Wrap each item individually in bubble wrap, tissue paper or newspaper. Fill hollow items with packing material, as well.
Place your items in the center of the box, and surround them on all sides with foam peanuts, shredded newspaper or additional bubble wrap.
Close the box and gently shake it to determine whether the contents are shifting. If you feel the items moving, add more packing material to ensure that all items are suspended, and will not continue to shift in transit.
Add a final layer of peanuts, bubble wrap or packing paper to the top of each box and place a label on top of the packing material. This label should include your return address and the shipping address, and will aid postal workers if the external label incurs damage or falls off in transit. Close the box securely
Tape the box shut using your 2-inch packing tape. In addition to taping the seam shut, reinforce each edge with one to two layers of additional tape.
Label your box with a Sharpie permanent marker or other waterproof marking pen. Remember to include a return mailing address in the upper left corner, in case your package does not arrive at its destination and needs to be sent back.

Under the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Semipostal Stamp Act of 2010, the Postal Service will transfer the net proceeds from the sale of these stamps to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to support the Multinational Species Conservation Funds. The funds include:

African Elephant Conservation Fund: Elephants capture our imagination, but poaching and loss of habitat have taken their future hostage. The African elephant population has shrunk dramatically, and while conservation efforts have stabilized the elephant population in southern Africa, much remains to be done.
Asian Elephant Conservation Fund: Asian elephants also face habitat issues. Conservation efforts have assisted in developing land use strategies that will benefit both man and animal, allowing both to flourish together.
Great Ape Conservation Fund: Endlessly fascinating, great apes are especially vulnerable. Orangutans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and bonobos are all at risk. Conservation efforts address issues of habitat loss, poaching, and disease in hopes of saving these amazing creatures.
Rhinoceros and Tiger Conservation Fund: Powerful and compelling, the rhinoceros and tiger are targeted by poachers and pressured by human civilization. Conservation programs have helped bring Africa’s white rhino population back to more than 17,000 and improved poaching detection and prosecution to stem the loss of tigers in various localities.
Marine Turtle Conservation Fund: For more than 100 million years, the ancestors of marine turtles swam the oceans. Yet in less than a century, exploitation and habitat destruction have devastated their numbers. Conservation projects work toward the goal of restoring large numbers of these ancient, intriguing creatures to the world’s oceans.

Derry Noyes served as the art director, designer, and typographer for the stamp. She worked with artist Nancy Stahl to develop one powerful illustration to symbolize the plight of all of these imperiled animals. The Amur tiger cub shown in the stamp art is one of five tiger subspecies. When full grown, this cat can weigh up to 650 pounds and measure 13 feet from its nose to the tip of its tail.

Wash Ave Rocks! - Washington Avenue Street Fair

On Saturday, August 20th, from 12-6pm New Yorkers came to get a real taste of Brooklyn at the second annual Wash Ave Rocks! Street Fair hosted by the Washington Avenue – Prospect Heights Association (WAPHA) . Washington Avenue between St. Marks Ave. and Prospect Pl became alive with local art, flavors, and families.
Children enjoyed an African Dance class taught by Shambhala Yoga & Dance Center, a skateboarding class by Park Delicatessan, a moonwalk, face-painting, balloon art, free snacks by NSA Supermarket and free school supplies from Away We Go Postal.
Established in August 2007, the Washington Avenue-Prospect Heights Association (WAPHA) provides support services for community initiatives in the Crown Heights/Prospect Heights neighborhoods, bound by Washington Avenue and adjoining cross streets between Atlantic Avenue and Eastern Parkway.
